RESEARCH--Mid-Atlantic Twin Registry
SUBJECTS NEEDED: Families of infant, preschool,
school-age and adult twins (and higher-order multiples) who are willing
to consider participating in health-related research. Identical and fraternal
twins of all ethnic backgrounds, and even twins whose co-twin is deceased,
can participate. Since many health conditions run in families, the
parents, children, brothers, sisters, and spouses of twins may also participate
in some of the research.
LOCATION: Richmond, Virginia is the site of
the research facility, but participants can be from anywhere in the U.S.A.
PURPOSE OF STUDY: Help scientists to understand
the influence of heredity (genes) and environmental factors in disease
that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to study. By identifying
a genetic or environmental component to these and other health issues,
early prevention and treatment efforts can be enhanced, considerably improving
public health.
INVESTIGATOR: Judy Silberg, Ph.D., Director,
The Mid-Atlantic Twin Registry, Virginia Commonwealth University, P.O.
Box 980003, Richmond, VA 23298-0003 1-800-URA-TWIN or 1-800-872-8946
Fax: 804-828-8101
e-mail: matr@vcu.edu
website: http://www.matr.gen.vcu.edu
INITIATION DATE:1970
COMPLETION DATE: Open Ended
METHOD OF INVESTIGATION: Typically involves
filling out a simple questionnaire or completing an interview conducted
over the telephone or in your home. Topics included in the past have been
epilepsy, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, inflammatory
bowel disease, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, clinical depression,
anxiety, pregnancy complications, periodontal disease, alcohol, nicotine
and other drug abuse, stress and coping, religiosity and spirituality,
social support and parenting styles. We invite you and your family to join
our research effort where twins are making an exceptional contribution
to scientific knowledge. If you are interested, we will periodically ask
you to participate in new or ongoing medical research projects. Taking
part in any specific study is completely voluntary, and you can withdraw
at any time.

RESEARCH--NOMOTC
approved
One of the goals of NOMOTC is to cooperate with
and participate in research
projects which involve multiples and/or their
families. The following
researchers have approached the National Organization
of Mothers of Twins
Clubs, Inc. with hopes of recruiting participants
for their studies. These
researchers all have contracts and have been
approved by NOMOTC.
If you or your multiples have the proper qualifications
and wish to
participate, please contact these researchers
directly for further details
concerning their studies. Contacting a researcher
doesn't obligate you to
participate. Please keep in mind that two of
the main purposes of NOMOTC are
research and education. Your participation in
these studies is encouraged.
Topics of open research studies are listed below.
